5. THE MAIN PLANTATIONS, THE RULERS WHO ORDERED THEM, AND THEIR SUCCESSES/FAILURES/OUTCOMES
(a) Laois-Offaly Plantation - Queen Mary - 1550s
Overall it was a failure because (a) only 88 families settled there (b) there were so few new English settlers, the planters were forced to employ the Gaelic Irish. However, it did become the blueprint for future plantations
_________________________________________________________________
(b) Munster Plantation - Queen Elizabeth 1st - 1580s
Neither a complete success nor a complete failure
Failings: (a) Only 4,000 families settled, (b) Although they were not supposed to, Undertakers did rent land to the Gaelic Irish because they would pay more rent. They also employed them because they would work for less money (c) the estates granted to undertakers were too big to defend properly.
Successes: (a) English farming practices took hold and became common in that area, (b) new towns grew such as Killarney and Mallow, (c) new industries were set up (timber, fishing, mining), (d) a strong Protestant population remained in Munster and were loyal to the Crown.
___________________________________________________________________
(c) Ulster Plantation - King James 1 - 1609 approx.
Successes: (a\) About 40,000 English and Scots settled, (b) new houses and towns were built, (c) Common Law was introduced, and courthouses and gaols built, (d) new religions introduced - Anglican and Presbyterian, (e) new ways of farming (fewer cattle, more crops) and trading (markets, fairs), (f) new towns - well planned with straight streets, a diamond/square in the centre, a church, a school, a courthouse, houses), (g) the native population lost control of the land even though they continued to farm it.
Failings: (a) the introduction of new religions caused conflict between the settlers and the natives, (b) many Gaelic Irish were bitter about losing their land and often attacked the settlers, (c) many undertakers employed Gaelic tenants which was against the rules - this meant there were still more Gaelic Irish than settlers
____________________________________________________________________
(d) Cromwellian Plantation - Oliver Cromwell - 1650s
Outcome: (a) wealthy landowners had to leave their homes and land (b) approx 40,000 people had to move across the River Shannon (c) Catholic landowners were replaced by Protestants - Catholic land ownership reduced from 60% to 20% (d) despite the fact that Protestants owned most of the land, it was the Catholics who remained farming it - so they still completely outnumbered the Protestants.
